MSCO Masterworks:
Copland, Mozart & Mendelssohn

David Rutherford, Music Director and Conductor

Friday, January 30 7:30 p.m.
Colorado Christian Univ. Music Center
9200 West Ellsworth Lakewood

Saturday, January 31 7:30 p.m.
Augustana Lutheran Church

Joy - Love - Struggle - Beauty - Peace. That pattern is so familiar, repeated throughout our lives and over the course of history, that countless stories follow its course. So recognizable is the shape that its imprint can be found in masterwork after musical masterwork. Such is the case with Copland's ballet Appalachian Spring, concerning a pioneer celebration around a newly-build farmhouse in the Pennsylvania hills in the early 1800s. The bride-to-be and the young farmer-husband enact the emotions, joyful and apprehensive, their new domestic partnership invites. Similarly, the love story explored in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream begins and ends in tranquility, but peace is always accompanied by struggle and conflict, perfectly encapsulated in Mendelssohn's overture. Indeed, the arc of human experience can even be found in Mozart's delightful Concerto for Flute, and although there is no story, its own narrative still rings true.

MSCO Masterworks:

Two-Way Street ~ featuring The Narrators

Friday & Saturday
April 24 & 25

Philip Ficsor, Violin

This is collaborative Story-Telling on an Orchestral Scale!

In MSCO’s most compelling collaboration yet, the orchestra teams up with Denver’s story-telling ensemble The Narrators for a program that explores the narrative qualities in great music as well as the musical qualities in great stories. They will have paid attention to how the music affects them, inspires feelings within them, evokes story lines, but most of all how it relates to their everyday lives. This side of the Two-Way Street culminates in their telling of the story they have found in the music, in collaboration with a performance by MSCO.On the other side of the street, as it were, The Narrators will fashion their own stories to which MSCO must react and respond with music that illuminates and completes their narratives. Three as-yet-unnamed masterworks will accompany the stories created in The Narrators’ bold, honest style.
While this much of the program illustrates the Two-Way Street between two genres of art, and between different kinds of performing artists on stage, a second Two-Way Street is yet to be explored – the one joining artists and audience. This final facet of the program will allow audience members to write their own stories to the music they hear, and if they wish, will have their stories interpreted live before the audience that very night by the talented and insightful Narrators.
